Forgotten Letters from the Underworld

I’m very excited to announce a new project/series that the incredibly talented artist M. Stagi and I are working on for my favorite children’s literature magazine Underneath the Juniper Tree. The series is called Forgotten Letters from the Underworld.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoy creating them. We hope to keep them going for a long time to come. I want to give a huge THANK YOU to Tex and Marjorie Merle over at UTJT for all their guidance and love. And especially for helping a little dream come true.

I’m not one to sit around and name drop or gab about all the cool things I get to do, be a part of, and get to witness on a daily basis. Wow, that sounded like I just did that without the name dropping. Oh wait, I’m going to do one of those now. My friend, buddy, fellow Star Wars nerd and amazing author, Tom Angleberger (you know, the guy who wrote Strange Case of Origami Yoda, among many other awesome books) recently had the sequel to Yoda released. The book I’m talking about is Darth Paper Strikes Back (Amulet, 2011). Why am I am bringing this up? Well, Tom tells me awhile back that I appear in the book. I thought, sure, okay, whatever! But then I get a copy of the book and I see my name huddled in with a bunch of amazing other names in the acknowledgements at the back of the book. I was so stoked. I told him THANK YOU for the Thank You! Of course he laughs and says “No, you are in the book! The story!”

Of course I furiously thumbed through the pages to stumble upon a character named Harvey Cunningham. That’s right, a Cunningham lives in the Darth Paper book. Needless to say (even though I am going to), I was floored, flabbergasted, dumbstruck… you get the point. First of all, having a character named after you in a book is a HUGE compliment (see my Warp Speed posting), but to also have it inside the pages of a book that has to do with Star Wars – well, that is simply one of the greatest honors to bestowed upon a human being (okay, maybe mostly in my world).

I honestly can’t thank Tom enough for such an amazing honor. I truly feel so lucky to have gotten to know him and be a part of his universe. Thank you a million time over, Tom. May the Force be with you ALWAYS!!

The Sugar Plum Incident & UTJT

My short story “The Sugar Plum Incident” was recently published in the September issue of Underneath the Juniper Tree. Yay! It has finally been unleashed upon the world. The 16th issue of Crow Toes Quarterly. Why is this such awesome news? Well, it is always awesome when a new issue of CTQ comes out, but this issue is a little more special to me this time around. Crow Toes Quarterly and HOOK

I am on cloud nine! I have just been informed that my short story A BOY NAMED HOOK will appear in the next, December 2010 issue of the magazine. Glorious issue 16 to be exact! I LOVE CTQ. Lisa Yee’s WARP SPEED

Over the last year I have been extremely fortunate enough to be a sounding board and uber geek for amazing middle-grade author Lisa Yee. Supplying gobs of Batman and Star Wars information while she wrote her soon to be released book WARP SPEED. Well, I’m certainly not going to leak any spoilers here. But there is some super cool stuff in the book and upon closer release of the book I hope to spill a few beans about some mentions in the book.

Brief synopsis – Lisa Yee returns to her core strength in older middle-grade fiction and the characters that made her famous in this “Diary of a Wimpy Trekkie.” Entering 7th grade is no big deal for Marley Sandelski: Same old boring classes, same old boring life. The only thing he has to look forward to is the upcoming Star Trek convention. But when he inadvertently draws the attention of Digger Ronster, the biggest bully in school, his life has officially moved from boring to far too dramatic . . . from invisible to center stage.
